In a tragic turn of events in Goodyear, Anthony Joseph Maiorana has been sentenced to prison for the death of his wife, Megan Maiorana, who died after the car they were in crashed into a neighborhood lake. According to a FOX 10 Phoenix report, he pleaded guilty to manslaughter, highlighting the dangers of driving under the influence.
Previously accused of manslaughter, Maiorana's charges were escalated to second-degree murder, as announced by the Maricopa County Attorney's Office, with a statement obtained by KTAR News confirming the indictment. An indictment does not in itself equate to proof of guilt but rather stands as a formal charge that will bring Maiorana to trial, where his fate will be determined.
The incident took place near Estrella Parkway and Willis Road on March 22, where witnesses reported the vehicle speeding and heard screaming before it plummeted into the water, and despite desperate attempts by responding officers and bystanders to rescue the victim, she was later found deceased by a dive team, the entire series of events happening just a short distance from where the couple lived.
Information from FOX 10 Phoenix revealed that Maiorana was visibly distressed and pleading for help following the fatal crash. The neighbor who witnessed the aftermath described him as "very upset" as the gravity of the situation sank in, with Megan trapped and ultimately losing her life in the submerged vehicle. Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell expressed gratitude to the citizens and officers who attempted to rescue Megan, stating, "We are pursuing this charge as a result of the husband’s reckless behavior," as reported by KTAR News.
