Governor Greg Abbott expressed gratitude toward the United States House of Representatives for greenlighting a substantial financial package earmarked for state reimbursement related to border security. The $12 billion allocation forms part of President Donald J. Trump's legislative push, known as One Big Beautiful Bill, and is aimed at covering expenses Texas incurred while responding to what Abbott describes as the "border crisis" under former President Joe Biden's administration.
In a statement released by the Governor's Office, Abbott voiced his perspective on the former administration's border policies. "Former President Biden’s reckless open border policies left Texas and the rest of America defenseless against an unprecedented surge of illegal immigration, requiring Texas to hold the line," he explained. The governor launched Operation Lone Star in March 2021, a program designed to quickly fill in the purported gaps left by federal authorities. Texas has since directed more than $11 billion of its own resources to support this initiative, money Abbott insists should be reimbursed by the federal government.
The governor's office publicized that back in January, letters were sent to the Congressional leadership and the entire Texas delegation. The letters made a case for reimbursement, citing over $11.1 billion in state funds spent as a direct response to the federal government's lack of action over the previous four years, as reported on the governor's website.
Abbott's appreciation for the House's action is palpable, but he maintains the legislative journey is far from over. "I am grateful that the Texas Congressional Delegation pushed for its inclusion in the U.S. House's version of President Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill, but there is more work yet to be done to get this legislation to the finish line," Abbott stated, as mentioned by the Governor's Office. He has signaled a commitment to actively work with the Senate, the Texas Congressional Delegation, and President Trump to ensure Texas receives full compensation for the additional border security measures they felt compelled to implement.
