Washington D.C. residents might want to keep their rain gear handy today as showers and thunderstorms are expected to roll through before the afternoon hours. According to the National Weather Service, there's an 80% chance of precipitation with a high near 70 degrees, as light winds turn westerly, picking up to between 5 to 10 mph in the morning. Notably, the rain could bring less than a tenth of an inch, though thunderstorms might result in higher amounts.
Tonight's forecast sees a decrease in rain probability, dropping to 30%, before the skies begin to clear, setting the stage for a partly cloudy night with a low around 53 degrees, winds will persist from the west at 5 to 7 mph, presenting another day where umbrellas might not be a necessity but it wouldn't hurt to keep one close at hand. The rest of the week through the Memorial Day weekend promises clearer skies with mostly sunny days and highs consistently around the 70-degree mark, and nighttime lows hovering near the 50s; Friday, particularly will be graced by sunny spells and a mild breeze with gusts that could peak at around 23 mph.
The holiday itself on Monday looks to change up the pattern with a 40% chance of showers after 2 p.m. and highs once again near 72 degrees, giving way to a night where the likelihood of rain increases to 60%. The following Tuesday, showers continue to be likely, maintaining mostly cloudy skies and a high near 70 degrees, and the pattern of precipitation seems intent on sticking around through Wednesday albeit with a slightly warmer high near 74 degrees and a 40% chance of rain.
