The shovels are set to break ground at Soundview Playfield as Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) embarks on a significant renovation project designed to revitalize the space for community use. The field at 1590 NW 90th Street, which sits beside Whitman Middle School in Seattle's northwest, will be transformed with the introduction of a new synthetic turf, along with other park amenities. SPR has teamed up with Terra Dynamics, Inc., which, starting the week of May 5, will roll out their construction equipment to begin the makeover.
According to a Seattle Parks and Recreation announcement, AP Diaz, Seattle Parks and Recreation Superintendent, expressed his enthusiasm about the venture. "Together with the athletic field community, SPR is delighted to move this project forward. This playfield renovation will offer Seattle another multi-sport field for all that provides year-round play," Diaz stated. He also highlighted the project's alignment with the Community Work Force Agreement, noting its potential as an educational opportunity for students at Whitman Middle School by exposing them to the construction and trades industry.
The beginning of construction will be celebrated at a groundbreaking ceremony slated for May 28, with the project's culmination anticipated in the fall of 2025. The plans for the field include the installation of a new synthetic turf suitable for sports such as softball, baseball, football, and soccer, complete with modern lighting for nighttime games and practices. The updated layout will feature accessible pathways and park amenities, ensuring a more inclusive environment in alignment with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). SPR and Terra Dynamics are committed to minimizing the impact of the construction on the surrounding neighborhood and extend thanks in advance to the local community for their patience and cooperation.
Funding for the renovation comes in part from the Seattle Park District Cycle 2, aimed at ensuring that Seattle's numerous parks and playfields remain prime locations for recreation and community gatherings. Emphasizing sustainability, the new fields will boast a cutting-edge synthetic turf system that purportedly offers better playability, durability, and reduced heat retention. Additionally, the highest quality, energy-efficient field lighting is set to be installed to curtail light spillage and glare, while maintaining an optimal level for sporting activities.
With the new field time the renovation will create, SPR is taking measures to equitably distribute this usage among diverse user groups, particularly those who have been historically underrepresented or faced barriers to accessing recreational facilities. Those interested in making use of the new field are encouraged to submit their applications by 5:00 p.m. on May 15, 2025. For assistance with the form or translation services, individuals can contact SPR at 206-684-4077.
