The tragic circumstances surrounding the death of 44-year-old Monica Islam, whose body was recovered in Mount Dora, have now been classified as a homicide by Lake County officials. Previously reported missing in the Eustis area, her body was discovered on May 2 near Scenic Hills Drive and Wolf Branch Road, prompting an investigation into her untimely demise. As per reports by WFTV, the Lake County sheriff’s office confirmed that the medical examiner determined Islam died from a gunshot wound.
Details about the investigation remain scant, authorities not yet releasing information about potential suspects or what might have led up to Islam's death, which leaves her family and community searching for answers in a pool of unknowns. Notwithstanding the lack of clarity on who may be responsible or their motive, investigators treat this incident as deliberate rather than random, a detail highlighted by FOX 35 Orlando.
The daughter of the deceased, who remains unnamed for safety concerns, expressed a harrowing worry about being potentially targeted next, asserting, "They killed my mom. They might kill me too," a statement she shared in an interview with WESH 2. Islam was last seen at an Eustis gas station where her daughter works, and she inexplicably vanished after stepping out to answer a phone call. Her daughter's subsequent attempts to reach her were met with the disheartening reality that Islam's phone was turned off, something apparently out of character for the 44-year-old.
