Homeowners in Harris County have until May 15 or 30 days after the date on their appraisal notice, whichever is later, to file a protest if they disagree with their property’s appraised value. The Harris Central Appraisal District sent notices showing increased values for most residential and commercial properties, as per Community Impact.

Property values in Harris County have changed, with most homes under $450,000 increasing by 1% to 5% and those over that amount rising by 7% to 12%, according to Community Impact. About 31% of homes had a decrease in value. A news conference with Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector Annette Ramirez and Harris Central Appraisal District Chief Appraiser Roland Altinger will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday to explain how to protest property valuations, as reported by KHOU. Protests can also be submitted online through the Harris Central Appraisal District website.

Harris Central Appraisal District Chief Appraiser Roland Altinger said in a news release that “The appraisal district tries to come as close to market value as we can with the data we have.” He added, “If the property owner does not think that value is correct, they should file an appeal and provide information in their protest meeting that could change the value,” as mentioned by Community Impact. As property values vary across the area, more homeowners may file protests in response to their updated appraisals.
