
Between May 12 and May 18, Hawai‘i Island police arrested 21 drivers for driving under the influence, the Hawai‘i Police Department reported. Twelve were involved in traffic crashes, and three were under the age of 21. This reflects ongoing enforcement efforts to address impaired driving, according to the Hawai'i Police Department.
There were 357 driving under the influence arrests this year, slightly down from 361 during the same period last year. However, major crashes increased to 392, compared to 381 last year, as reported by the Hawai'i Police Department.
The number of fatal crashes and deaths in Hawai‘i has decreased this year, with 12 crashes resulting in 13 deaths, compared to 14 crashes and 16 deaths at the same time last year. There have been no non-traffic fatalities reported. The Hawai‘i Police Department’s Traffic Services Section will continue DUI roadblocks and patrols.
