A Honduran man, identified as Rossel Geovanny Recinos Arita, age 30, is facing charges after being accused of illegally reentering the United States, the Department of Justice reported recently. According to the DOJ announcement, Recinos Arita was charged last Monday for reentry of a removed alien, which violates Title 8, United States Code, Section 1326(a).
Found in St. Tammany Parish on or around February 24, Recinos Arita had previously been deported back to Honduras on June 19, 2018, according to court documents obtained by the DOJ. Following Operation Take Back America, an initiative targeting illegal immigration and crime, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection took praise from Acting U.S. Attorney Michael M. Simpson for its role in investigating the recurrence of Recinos Arita's presence on U.S. soil.
The operation, as described by the DOJ, is a push to repel what it calls "the invasion of illegal immigration," with the goal of completely dismantling cartels and transnational criminal organizations, while safeguarding communities from violent crime. The initiative unifies efforts from the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN).
Should he be convicted, the stakes are high for Recinos Arita. He faces a potential maximum penalty of two years in prison, not to mention the possibility of a hefty fine up to $250,000, in addition to up to one year of supervised release and a $100 mandatory special assessment fee. Yet, as stated in a DOJ release, "the bill of information is merely a charge and the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt."
Assistant United States Attorney Paul J. Hubbell of the General Crimes Unit is overseeing the prosecution. The Operation Take Back America continues its stride, indicative of a broader crackdown on immigration policies under current administration directives.
