A Honduran national, Jose Melvin Lopez-Lorenzo, 29, has been indicted on the charge of illegal re-entry into the United States, as announced by Acting U.S. Attorney Michael M. Simpson. This federal offense, in violation of Title 8, United States Code, Section 1326(a), follows Lopez-Lorenzo's detainment on April 10 and comes after his prior deportation on July 26, 2018. The U.S. Attorney's Office was keen to remind the public that an indictment should not be read as evidence of guilt. "indictment is merely a charge," Simpson said, "and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt." Details of the indictment reveal that Lopez-Lorenzo purportedly re-entered the U.S. without the requisite authorization from the Attorney General. His case underscores the ongoing complexities of immigration enforcement and the legal ramifications faced by individuals attempting to re-enter the country after removal.

In addition to incarceration and a hefty fine, the indictment states he may also be subject to up to one year of supervised release and is obligated to pay a mandatory special assessment fee of $100.00, as per the U.S. Attorney's Office.
The United States Border Patrol received accolades from Simpson for their role in investigating the matter leading to Lopez-Lorenzo's indictment. Handling the prosecution is Assistant United States Attorney Carter K.D. Guice, Jr. of the General Crimes Unit, whose diligence in such cases helps maintain the integrity of U.S. borders and immigration policies, as detailed by the U.S. Attorney's Office.
