Houston is bracing for a stretch of summer-like heat this week, with forecasters predicting a heat wave that could tie or break record highs for May. According to the National Weather Service, the city can expect sunny skies and highs pushing into the mid-90s. South winds will blow at 5 to 15 mph, with evening gusts up to 20 mph.
Residents began feeling the temperature rise today, as the highs hovered near 92 degrees. The heat, paired with the prevailing south winds 5 to 15 mph, is contributing to the seasonal shift. Tonight the city is set for mostly clear skies, and a low around 74 degrees. But as the week progresses, humidity will join forces with the heat, pushing feels-like temperatures towards the 100 mark. "Record highs this week are in the low to mid 90s, and with forecast highs in the mid 90s, we will probably have a few records tied or broken," FOX 26 Houston reports.
Ozone levels are also a concern, as an Ozone Action Day continues through the evening. Those with heart or lung conditions are advised to avoid extended outdoor exertion. Moving into the night, the humidity is expected to remain relatively low, making for a slight reprieve from the day's heat. However, as the week advances, the combination of heat and humidity will make outdoor conditions increasingly harsh, as per FOX 26 Houston.
The extended forecast suggests no relief in sight, with temperatures predicted to stay firmly in the 90s late into May. Despite the heat, rain chances are slim, "Rain chances remain very low and more likely for areas well north and west of Houston," noted FOX 26 Houston. The consistent heat indicates that Houstonians will have to find ways to stay cool, as the city gets a taste of the summer heat ahead of schedule.
