The National Weather Service in Honolulu has updated the forecast, indicating that scattered showers will continue in windward and mauka areas. These showers are expected to persist, especially during the overnight and early morning hours throughout the week, according to the National Weather Service.
Trades winds, influenced by a low-pressure system northeast of the islands and a high-pressure system, are bringing light showers to the region. The National Weather Service states, "Showers should continue riding on the trades through the next several days mostly overnight into the early morning hours." Precipitation is expected to increase as a subtropical jet to the south shifts later this week. Aviation alerts include AIRMET Sierra for mountain obscuration on the Big Island and AIRMET Tango for moderate turbulence, especially near island mountains.
The National Weather Service has issued a Small Craft Advisory for several channels and local waters around Maui and the Big Island, in effect until 6 PM HST on Wednesday. The advisory may be extended later in the week due to ongoing fresh to locally strong trade winds. Small to moderate swells are creating choppy conditions, particularly along east-facing shores. "Surf along east-facing shores will be rough and choppy the next several days due to the fresh to locally strong trades," as reported by the National Weather Service. Residents and visitors are advised to stay updated on weather advisories.
