Authorities are looking into the death of a 31-year-old woman who died in custody at the Las Colinas Detention and Reentry Facility, just a day after being arrested on multiple theft-related charges. The San Diego County Sheriff's Office released a statement noting that the inmate was found unresponsive in her cell on Monday at approximately 7:25 PM during routine checks by the facility's sergeants.
The responsive sergeants, observing the individual's condition, wasted no time in initiating CPR and calling for medical assistance immediately. The woman was transported by Santee Fire Department Medic 5, with personnel continuing lifesaving efforts upon their arrival. Tragically, the woman was pronounced dead at the local hospital at about 8:15 PM.
Having been in Sheriff's custody since Sunday, the woman was facing charges that included vehicle theft and resisting an officer. The Sheriff's Office is withholding the identity of the deceased at this time, as her family has yet to be notified. "The San Diego Sheriff's Office extends our sympathies to the decedent's family and all those affected by her passing." A Family Liaison Officer has been appointed to assist the family during this difficult time, as mentioned in the Sheriff's statement.
The Citizens' Law Enforcement Review Board (CLERB) was notified of the incident promptly, which is standard procedure for all in-custody deaths. The Sheriffs' Homicide Unit is conducting a thorough investigation to ensure every aspect of this incident is closely scrutinized. The Medical Examiner's Office will determine the cause and manner of death, as they were notified and will soon receive the results of their examination.
