A woman held at the DeSoto County jail died following a "critical" medical emergency, as reported by the sheriff's office. The 37-year-old detainee was in a medical holding cell when the incident occurred yesterday, and despite life-saving attempts by the jail staff, she was later pronounced deceased at the hospital, Action News 5 detailed.
The DeSoto County Sheriff's Office has since issued a statement, indicating that the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation will be stepping in to independently determine the events that led to the woman's death. The DCSO spokesperson stated, "The DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office is fully cooperating with the investigation and is committed to maintaining transparency throughout the process," a sentiment echoed in information released by Local Memphis.
The identity of the deceased has not been made public as the investigation continues. This tragic event has prompted a closer look into the circumstances surrounding the woman's emergency and exactly what occurred within the medical holding cell that day. As part of the procedure, emergency medical staff were summoned and she was promptly taken to the nearest hospital, but efforts to revive her ultimately did not succeed, according to statements obtained by WREG News Channel 3.
While the MBI conducts its investigation, details remain limited. The death in custody is a grave matter and is being treated with the seriousness it warrants.
