A tragic incident occurred yesterday morning in Jacksonville, resulting in the death of a woman on an e-bike. The collision took place near Blanding Boulevard and San Juan Avenue. News4Jax reported that the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) confirmed the female bicyclist, in her mid-30s, was struck by a tow truck while both were heading southbound. The fatal encounter occurred when the tow truck driver made a right turn onto westbound San Juan Avenue, colliding with the e-bike.
According to WOKV, JSO further detailed that the bicyclist died at the scene. The JSO statement, sourced by WOKV, also noted that the tow truck driver was cooperating with the ongoing investigation, and impairment did not appear to be a factor. The woman tragically became the 50th traffic fatality in Jacksonville for the year.
Data mentioned by First Coast News highlighted an alarming trend of e-bike related accidents. Earlier in the week, another crash involving an e-bike left a middle-school boy airlifted with critical injuries. The recent spate of incidents has raised concerns about the safety of e-bikes, which have been gaining in popularity as a mode of transportation.
The victim in the latest crash was not wearing a helmet, as reported by First Coast News. The tow truck driver involved in the crash, described as making a routine right turn, is part of an investigation by the JSO's traffic homicide unit to determine fault. This incident marked the fourth fatal crash involving a bicyclist this year in Jacksonville.
