A tragic incident on Jacksonville's Westside has led to the arrest of a man following the accidental shooting death of his 2-year-old son. According to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, the young child suffered a fatal gunshot wound on April 20 at a residence on Calvary Drive. First Coast News reported that the boy was found by officers and taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The JSO worked in conjunction with the U.S. Marshals Task Force to arrest the 31-year-old father on Thursday on charges of child neglect and culpable negligence, as per information from a JSO Facebook post. Despite the emphasis on gun safety and the legal requirements in Florida, it is moments like this that starkly remind us of the implications of failing to secure firearms.
In a statement obtained by News4Jax, the sheriff’s office underscored that "Safe firearm storage around minors is not only common sense—it is the law in Florida. Children are our most precious resource‚" highlighting the grave responsibilities that come with gun ownership.
The specifics of how the toddler came into contact with the weapon have not been disclosed. WOKV reported that the investigation led authorities to determine that the child accessed an improperly stored firearm within the home, which resulted in the tragic accident. This has prompted renewed discussions on the critical need for proper gun safety practices to prevent such incidents from occurring.
