The events were marked by ceremonies held at Memorial Park and the Veterans Memorial Wall, where attendees paid tribute to military personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty, as reported by First Coast News.
Hundreds congregated in Memorial Park for a free concert and picnic, the park effusing patriotism with a display of American flags, as District 7 council member Jimmy Peluso detailed the city’s pride in being a military town and a Purple Heart city, expressing reverence for those "that served" according to an interview with News4Jax. Meanwhile, at the Veterans Memorial Wall, which will soon mark its 30th anniversary, Gold Star Families like Kristle Helmuth, who lost her husband in 2018, were joined by Navy Band Southeast and The Voices of Jacksonville, and Mayor Donna Deegan highlighted the wall's importance, calling it a gathering place of honor, unity and remembrance.
Kristle Helmuth shared with First Coast News, saying, "It’s a full-circle journey for me,” Helmuth said. “Knowing that way back when I lost my husband, I had the support of them—and now years later, still having the support of the community—it really warms my heart." Congressman John Rutherford also conveyed his gratitude for the fallen and their families, reiterating the ceremony's essence of gratitude for freedom's protectors.
In contrast to previous years, this year's ceremony at the Veterans Memorial Wall was noted for having no new names added, despite the U.S. Department of Defense stating an average of one thousand military deaths annually over the past decade, a point reported by Action News Jax.
