The Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) has temporarily suspended operations of the St. Johns River Ferry following an incident on Sunday evening. According to a press release from the JTA, the ferry collided with the boarding ramp at Mayport Landing, prompting an immediate halt in service for damage assessment and repairs. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the mishap.
Inspections and repair work commenced shortly after the incident to evaluate the extent of the damage to both the ferry and the landing infrastructure. The JTA and coordinating authorities are presently investigating what exactly led to the ferry's contact with the boarding ramp. The suspension of service will remain in effect until the inspections are completed and any necessary repairs are made. During this period, commuters who rely on the ferry for daily transit will have to seek alternatives.
In the interim, the JTA encourages passengers to check for service updates through their official website at www.jtafla.com or through the MyJTA mobile app. The JTA has a commitment to ensuring the safety and reliability of its transport services which include not only the St. Johns River Ferry but also BRT, regular bus service, paratransit, the Skyway APM, and other on-demand services across multiple counties.
With its responsibilities to maintain multi-modal transportation options in Northeast Florida, the JTA emphasizes the importance of infrastructure integrity and public safety in its operations. The St. Johns River Ferry service is a vital link in the community's transportation network, and as such, a swift resolution is a priority for community commuting across the river. Details regarding the incident and subsequent repair procedures haven't been disclosed, as the investigation remains under the JTA's purview.
