An armed juvenile was apprehended last week after attempting to evade law enforcement during a traffic stop, according to a post by the Union County Sheriff's Office on social media. The incident, which unfolded near U.S. 74 in Monroe, North Carolina, involved a 16-year-old male who took off on foot while officers were preparing to conduct a narcotics check on the vehicle he occupied.

The Union County Sheriff's Office reported that during the pursuit of the teenager, Deputy Helms, accompanied by his K-9 partner Eli, noticed that the suspect owned a pistol. The young suspect subsequently surrendered and was taken into custody without further resistance. The deputies, however, initially could not find the firearm when they detained the juvenile and suspected it was discarded during the chase.

A meticulous search by Deputy Helms and the keen olfactory skills of K-9 Eli led to the discovery of a Glock semi-automatic pistol. The weapon was cleverly hidden in a thick brush along the route taken by the suspect. According to the Union County Sheriff's Office's Facebook page, the recovered pistol played a crucial part in ensuring both officer safety and community protection.

The juvenile, whose name has not been released because of his age, now faces multiple charges and was transported to a local detention center. The Union County Sheriff's Office commended Deputy Helms and K-9 Eli for their dedication and skill in a follow-up post, which acknowledged their contribution to safely resolving the potentially dangerous situation. The officers involved in the incident remained unharmed.
