The City of Killeen has just been recognized as a travel hotspot by the Governor of Texas. In an announcement commended by Governor Greg Abbott, the city was officially designated as a Tourism Friendly Texas Certified Community, a title bestowed by Travel Texas as part of their inaugural program aimed at economic growth through tourism. According to a press release, the honor comes after Killeen completed a multi-step certification process, demonstrating a commitment to expanding its tourism sector, which is already a major economic driver for the region.
Emphasizing the importance of the sector, Governor Abbott noted, "Tourism is critical to both our local and state economies, supporting one in 11 jobs across Texas." He added, “Travelers to and within Texas generate more than $199 billion in annual economic impact and support 1.3 million jobs across the state," as reported by the Governor's Office. The governor urged other communities in Texas to follow suit to bolster local tourism and jobs. Travel Texas Director Tim Fennell weighed in on Killeen's unique appeal, highlighting its historic connections and a variety of visitor attractions that encompass everything from arts and shopping to dining.
Local elected representatives have been vocal in their praise for Killeen's achievement. State Senator Pete Flores, echoing these sentiments, said, “This recognition highlights Killeen’s commitment to promoting tourism as a vital catalyst for economic growth and job creation,” as mentioned in the same press release. Representative Brad Buckley celebrated Killeen's combination of military and railroad history with modern amenities, expressing anticipation for the expected increase in visitors. Similarly, Representative Hillary Hickland highlighted the significance of Killeen's large size and military presence as draws for national attention.
The celebration also resounded through the local tourism office, with Killeen Convention & Visitors Bureau Manager Tanida Mullen expressing pride for the city's collective effort. “This designation isn’t just an achievement — it’s a reflection of the vibrant experiences, warm hospitality, and economic growth that tourism brings to our city," Mullen told the Governor's press office. While praising the hardworking staff and community, she outlined how they aim to make every visitor feel at home.
Part of the larger mission of Travel Texas in the Governor's Texas Economic Development & Tourism Office is to promote Texas as a top travel destination to out-of-state and international markets, aiming to generate non-Texan travel to the state. The Tourism Friendly Texas Community program is available to local governments or non-profit organizations tasked with the promotion and development of tourism. It provides a platform for communities to strengthen tourism development strategies, prioritize local efforts, and tap into state government resources in support of travel and tourism industries.
