The Lake Havasu City Police Department recently publicized their law enforcement statistics for the 2025 Memorial Day weekend, capturing a snapshot of how our celebrations are policed. From May 23rd to last Monday, officers were called into service 904 times and made 93 arrests, according to the department’s report. A total of 55 individuals found themselves spending time in the LHCPD jail, while another 34 were cited and sent on their way, and four juveniles were referred to authorities and released.
During these extended weekends, traffic and DUI enforcement are pushed to the forefront of the department's efforts, backed by a grant from the Governor's Office of Highway Safety, aiming to consistently reduce accidents and ensure public safety. It was on this front that the department swung into action to arrest 19 DUI offenders, with three charges heightened to the level of felony due to the severity. Officials also managed to quickly conduct civil traffic stops, stopping as many as 370 drivers and handing out 96 citations in the process.
While the abbreviations of legal jargon and coded numbers paint an impersonal picture, they nonetheless serve as markers of a reality that our feasts and festivities are underlain by forces of control and supervision. The presence of law enforcement during such holidays is a critical component in maintaining order and safety but also can act to sharply define the lines between celebrating and stepping outside the boundary of the law.
According to LHCPD's Public Information Officer, Sergeant Kyle Ridgeway, these enforcement measures were necessary to make sure to better ensure a safe holiday environment for all city residents and visitors alike.
