Tragedy struck the streets of Lake Wales on Friday when 18-year-old Isaiyah Cabrera robbed an 11-year-old child selling chocolate for a school fundraiser. As reported by FOX 13 News, the young entrepreneur had managed to collect $107 in donations, which Cabrera snatched before escaping on an electric scooter, and in a reckless departure, ran over the child's foot.
Local business owners in Lake Wales, Jessica Garrett and Cathy Garrett, mother and daughter and co-owners of Viola Vines and The Ranch Coffeehouse, replaced the stolen money with their own funds amid hearing about the theft, according to an interview with Lake Wales Daily. In a swift response to the incident, Lake Wales Police Department officers canvassed the area, using surveillance footage from surrounding businesses to identify Cabrera.
Upon Cabrera's arrest on Tuesday, the Lake Wales Police Department found him with a loaded .25 caliber handgun, and Cabrera later admitted to carrying the weapon during the robbery. He has been charged with robbery by sudden snatching while in possession of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, and violation of probation. According to WFTV, Cabrera was already on probation for a previous theft offense when he committed this crime.
