On a recent Saturday preceding the landmark 150th Preakness Stakes, the National Thoroughbred League kicked off its 2025 season at Baltimore's Pimlico Race Course, with Lamar Jackson, Ravens quarterback and two-time NFL MVP, playing host. The New York Knights triumphed at the Pimlico Cup as part of a broader initiative combining sports with philanthropy and community engagement, reported The Baltimore Sun.
Lamar Jackson's Maryland Colts joined the race, showcasing the NTL's team-based concept amid a throng of local spectators and festivities tailored for broader appeal. Robert Daugherty, co-founder of the NTL and owner of the California Shamrocks, revealed the league's motif of simplicity and inclusivity in horse racing. "So, we want to bring a lot more fans into the sport by attracting celebrities and making the games simpler. So, to read the racing format at any track to this day is complicated, we're simplifying it," Daugherty stated, as per WMAR. Horse safety is a paramount concern within the league, embracing centralized regulations to prioritize animal welfare.
The Forever Dreamers 8 Scholars program was spotlighted as part of the events, an initiative to mentor high school seniors from the Park Heights neighborhood in careers within the thoroughbred industry. Participants receive hands-on experience in various roles, from horse training to veterinary services, providing a robust pre-professional opportunity. "When they graduate, hopefully a bunch of these local residents will have jobs waiting for them," said NTL co-founder Randall Lane, according to a statement made to The Baltimore Sun.
The initiative aligns with Jackson's Charitable commitments, which have leveraged his athletic success to bring about community uplift. Dee M. Robinson, CEO of Good Trouble Spirits Company, commented on the congruence between the NTL's community engagement and Baltimore's ethos.
