Las Vegas is stepping up its efforts to address a feline overpopulation problem with a notable initiative titled “Mayor Shelley’s Spay Days,” a two-day event focused on spaying and neutering approximately 300 community cats. As reported by KTNV, this venture is backed by Mayor Shelley Berkley and brings together Heaven Can Wait Animal Society, Hearts Alive Village, Nevada SPCA, and Community Cat Coalition of Clark County (C5) in a unified front to mitigate the escalating number of stray cats in the region, with an estimated 200,000 ownerless cats according to a prior statement from C5.
The spayathon's ambitious plan has generated a buzz on Instagram, with Hearts Alive Village Las Vegas heralding the event as a historic collaboration among local animal welfare organizations—an effort described as “a movement, a kindness revolution,” which goes beyond merely performing Trap Neuter Return procedures but rather serves as a “love letter to the street cats.” The procedures are slated for May 9 at Heaven Can Wait Animal Society, followed by May 10 at Hearts Alive Village Animal Clinic, each day tackling the goal to sterilize, vaccinate, and treat 150 cats, totaling 300 to make their way back to their respective urban landscapes post-operation.
“Each cat we spay or neuter during this event represents a life saved — and thousands of future lives prevented from suffering,” expressed Rachel Bergren, executive director of Heaven Can Wait Animal Society, in a statement obtained by KTNV. While the immediate impact of the spayathon centers on the cats at hand, advocates point to the broader effects of such measures, citing potential declines in the number of kitten births and consequent reduction in nuisance calls to Animal Protection Services.
Alongside the live procedures, Hearts Alive Village Las Vegas is set to host a Facebook Live “Telathon” during the event, giving supporters an opportunity to witness the effort in real time and contribute financially to future endeavors. As the event approaches, with its promise of wide-reaching implications for the wellbeing of Las Vegas’ feline inhabitants, there remains an air of hopeful anticipation for the positive change that what “Mayor Shelley’s Spay Days” might usher in for the local animal community and the residents sharing the space with these streetwise survivors.
