Nevada is moving forward with improving its roads, as the Department of Transportation begins new overnight lane closures in the Las Vegas Valley to update freeway signs. Crews will replace I-515 signs with new I-11 markers as part of a larger plan to boost north-south travel and support regional growth, according to the Nevada Department of Transportation.
The schedule, subject to the whims of weather and other unpredictable elements, details lane reductions starting 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday through to the early morning hours of Thursday. Henderson and Downtown Las Vegas will see the most immediate effects, with West Sunset Rd and East Sunset Rd among the stretches set for signage updates, as reported by the Nevada Department of Transportation. Similar restrictions will then roll out from 9:00 p.m. Thursday, May 8, to 5:00 a.m. Friday, May 9, affecting areas such as North Boulder Highway and North 4th St.
Drivers should expect some nighttime delays due to lane closures and are encouraged to plan for detours or use other routes. For real-time updates, check the Waze app, which shares planned road restrictions from the Nevada Department of Transportation. To reduce traffic issues, the contractor is only allowed to work in 5-mile sections each night.
Underpinning this signage overhaul is the significance of I-11 to regional trade and transportation. Since its official designation by the Federal Highway Administration in November 2023, I-11's promise of a streamlined passageway from Mexico to Canada has shimmered on the horizon of possibility, as emphasized by the Nevada Department of Transportation's announcement.
