The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) Enforcement Division has turned its focus to the waterways, on the hunt for unregistered houseboats. These houseboats, which have escaped the dragnet of registration, are not simply overlooked details but pivotal elements in Louisiana's efforts to maintain its navigable waterways. In a statement released by the LDWF, agents patrolling will pursue investigations to find the owners of any located unregistered houseboats. The consequences are clear: get registered or receive a citation.

The requirement to register houseboats was established on January 1, 2019. Yet, some still float without official recognition, increasing the risk of becoming derelict or abandoned. These forsaken structures, according to LDWF, increase the hazards for boaters and clutter the waterways. An unregistered houseboat is often forgotten—it can become hard to see at night and eventually turn into a navigation hazard.

The LDWF has a tip line for those who may have information about these rogue residences. Calling Operation Game Thief at 1-800-442-2511 can prompt an agent to take over the investigation. The definition of a 'houseboat,' according to LDWF standards, considers various physical characteristics. As stated in their news release, key identifiers include "whether the vessel has a roof and is enclosed, or has multiple walls or structures capable of protecting inhabitants from the elements."

Further details that LDWF agents may examine include "presence of doors, windows, electrical wiring, plumbing, appliances, cabinetry, bedding, or any other features commonly found in a dwelling," though titling for these dwellings, whether homemade or commercially produced, is not a requirement. Upon successful registration, applicants will receive a registration certificate and instructions for HIN decal placement on their houseboat, as reported by LDWF.
