With mosquito season in full swing from April to December, residents of League City are looking for ways to combat the pesky biters. League City has partnered with Galveston County to take down the mosquito population through a variety of efforts. According to a recent update from League City's official website, the Galveston County Mosquito Control office is heading up the majority of the spraying service, tackling both residential and commercial areas.
In a move to augment the efforts by Galveston County, League City’s Public Works Department implements its own mosquito control program. This includes applying larvicides to city-maintained spaces and stormwater systems, using products that are designed to be harmless to pets, bees, and other beneficial insects. An effort is made toward adult mosquito management, whereby ultra-low volume adulticide mosquito spray is used exclusively at city-owned facilities for large events, but only when the mosquito population surpasses set limits. Whether it's monitoring and improving drainage areas or collecting critical mosquito data, the city is on the front lines.
When the locals find themselves battling an uptick in mosquito activity, there are steps they can take to protect their families and properties. Residents are encouraged to call the Galveston County Mosquito Control at 1-800-842-5622 for information on spray services in their area, but should note the county does not tend to private roads or property. Removing stagnant water, which serves as a breeding ground for the insects, is paramount. This means clearing out puddles, maintaining gutters, and changing the water in bird baths and pet bowls at least twice a week. For bodies of standing water that cannot be emptied, mosquito dunks are a recommended larvicide that's generally safe for pets. The city also advises residents to keep swimming pools and fountains properly treated with chemicals and to cover their trash containers to prevent water collection.
