In a concerted effort to tackle the prevailing child care conundrum, Lieutenant Governor Rachel Hunt has inaugurated a tour of the state's daycares, the "Future-Ready Child Care Tour," making a stop at Kid Appeal Learning Center in High Point. During her visit, co-owners Angela and Bruce Davis, alongside local officials, joined Hunt as she engaged with educators, parents, and children to scrutinize the issues first-hand. "Our children deserve safe, nurturing environments where they can explore, thrive, and discover who they are," Hunt remarked, as quoted by Lieutenant Governor Rachel Hunt, underscoring the urgency of providing quality, affordable child care.
Reflecting on the sector's tribulations, Bruce Davis emphasized the hardship in balancing quality with affordability, stating "Child care is in a crisis. Providers are struggling to pay teachers the wages they deserve, while still remaining affordable for families." The plight of child care providers, as highlighted by Davis during Lieutenant Governor Hunt's visit, emerges from the escalating operational costs juxtaposed with their commitment to maintaining a high standard of care, according to Lieutenant Governor Rachel Hunt.
Hunt's tour is part of a broader initiative that takes her across North Carolina since April, engaging with various stakeholders to unearth practical solutions to the child care crisis. In her remarks at Kid Appeal Learning Center, she brought attention to innovative approaches like the state's Tri-Share program, which distributes child care costs between an employer, the state, and families. This initiative echoes Hunt’s "Future-Ready North Carolina" platform, which calls for investments in early childhood education and workforce development through resources like community colleges.
At the intersection of education and profession, Hunt also serves as a pivotal figure in policy shaping, occupying seats on both the State Board of Education and Community College Board. There, she will further advocate for Career and College-Ready Graduate Programs, aiming to fortify the nexus between early education and long-term career paths. Hunt's dedication to the cause is underscored by her role as Co-Chair of the Governor’s Task Force on Child Care and Early Education with Senator Jim Burgin, seeking, to enhance the child care framework through increased public and private investments as well as recruitment and retention strategies for child care professionals, according to Lieutenant Governor Rachel Hunt.
