A man has been charged after he allegedly slashed the tires of over 30 cars in a disturbing spree at a Ballantyne Publix parking lot. According to WCNC, Darren Anthony Ransom, 30, is accused of targeting the vehicles at the Publix in Ballantyne Town Center on Saturday. Witnesses reported that Ransom was seen attacking cars for roughly 20 minutes before the police arrived on the scene. Ransom was subsequently apprehended at an nearby restaurant.
Footage of the event showing the tire slashings went viral, and appears to capture Ransom using a knife to puncture the tires. Despite the videos circulating online, WBTV reported that there is still much unknown about the incident. A Publix representative confirmed to WBTV their full cooperation with investigators from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department into the allegations.
Onlookers in the parking lot described the scene as chaotic and distressing. "There were a lot of people upset about it, I know there were some people crying, some people were a little scared," an onlooker, Lewis, told QC News. Lewis also stated that the suspect seemed to be armed with what looked like a pocketknife, introducing a sharp and dangerous element to an otherwise mundane Saturday.
The tires of 40 vehicles were reportedly damaged in the incident. This act not only represents a considerable loss for the car owners but also disrupted the sense of community safety typically found in the local supermarket lot. Publix has not released a statement regarding any support for those affected, but concern among the patrons and sympathy for the victims is palpable.
