A man in his mid-30s was left in critical condition following a shooting at a Jacksonville apartment complex iearlier today. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office (JSO) stated that multiple gunshot wounds were sustained by the victim, and the incident took place at Westwood Apartments, located at 1171 South Lane Ave, as reported by First Coast News.
JSO Sgt. Ray Reeves informed that officers were dispatched to the scene around 3:30 a.m. and upon arrival, they found the injured man, who was later transported to the hospital by the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department (JFRD), according to News4Jax. As the investigation unfolds the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unknown "We are currently in the process of working on that investigation and all that comes with it," Sgt. Reeves said, "We have spoken with witnesses on the scene and are trying to come up with a timeline that will help us."
Meanwhile, a separate but possibly related incident occurred in the same city where police responded to reports of gunfire at an apartment complex in Hillcrest. A younger man in his late 20s was found outside of his apartment, enduring multiple gunshot injuries, as detailed by a news conference mentioned on ActionNewsJax. The man was discovered by officers who were called to the area following the report of gunfire.
The JSO has not confirmed if the shootings are connected, but the proximity of the incidents and the close sequence of events have raised concerns within the community, as violence touches yet again on the doorsteps of residents seeking respite in the sanctity of their homes, the once-thought safe havens are beset by the ripple of gunfire that tear through the veil of a night's supposed peace. No suspects have been publicly identified or arrests made in these cases, Reeves did not provide additional details on potential leads or motives but the investigations are ongoing as law enforcement continues to gather evidence and testimonies from potential witnesses.
