The Maricopa County Library District (MCLD) has rolled out a new parental choice pilot program at the Queen Creek Library. It's a fresh way for parents to shape their children's reading material to better align with their values and preferences, according to a statement from MCLD.
Chairman Thomas Galvin, District 2, conveyed his enthusiasm, stating, "This innovative program provides families with a tool to manage their child's access to specific books, ensuring content reflects their family's values and preferences." He shared in the same statement that he's been advocating for such a cause for some time and takes pride as a parent that the county has found a way to respect every family's needs without impeding on others' choices.
Maricopa County Supervisor Mark Stewart, who represents the area including Queen Creek, likened it to a movie rating system that sets up certain guardrails to safeguard kids.
Local government leaders hail the initiative, with Queen Creek Mayor Julia Wheatley saying, "We appreciate the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors for listening to our residents, and we’re grateful to the Library District for creating a program that empowers parents to be actively involved in the content their children access."
This tailored approach to child literacy is not without its boundaries, however. The pilot program is strictly available to parents or legal guardians who have their library account linked with their child's. Furthermore, they have to visit the Queen Creek Library in person to list the books they desire to restrict, although the program stops short of permitting the blocking of entire categories or age groups.
MCLD Director Jeremy Reeder ensured the district's devotion to offering a diverse collection. He stated, "During this pilot, we'll evaluate what's working and what's not, incorporate feedback from visitors, and then determine whether it makes sense to offer this tool at other county libraries." For more details, the district has provided an FAQ page on their website, encouraging interested parties to learn more about this unique program.
