Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey has appointed a new leader and two vice chairs to the Judicial Nominating Commission (JNC), shaking up the committee responsible for vetting judicial candidates in the state. As mentioned in a press release from the governor's office, Kathy Henry will take the helm as Chair after having served as Vice Chair, with Asha Santos and Mark Shaughnessy stepping in as Vice Chairs.

Henry, with her extensive background in legal and strategic advising, has been a part of the JNC since 2023. Meanwhile, the Commission, dropping their roles after two terms are Abim Thomas and Mark Fleming, have been credited by Healey for bolstering the judiciary with qualified judges. "The Judicial Nominating Commission does incredibly important work to identify the very best candidates to become judges who will uphold justice and the rule of law," Governor Healey stated, recognizing the outgoing leadership for their contributions.

The JNC's role in the Massachusetts judicial system has been significant under Governor Healey's tenure, with the commission recommending 72 judges and four Clerk Magistrates, all of whom have been confirmed. As the newly appointed Chair, Kathy Henry brings over two decades of legal experience, making her a prime candidate to guide the JNC. Henry has previously served as General Counsel and Deputy General Counsel at Plymouth Rock Assurance Corporation and litigated for 11 years at Choate, Hall & Stewart LLP.

Joining Henry are Vice Chairs Asha Santos, who began her tenure with the JNC in 2024, and Mark Shaughnessy, who has also served since 2023. Standing as the head of three law offices, Santos has garnered respect for her investigations into workplace issues, having dealt with sensitive matters related to harassment and discrimination. On his end, Shaughnessy brings valuable courtroom experience, with hundreds of jury trials under his belt and multiple successful appellate arguments. "I am confident that Kathy, Asha and Mark will continue this high quality of work," Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll told the governor's office, speaking about the new team, while not having overlooked the efforts of their predecessors.

The JNC, a volunteer-driven body appointed by the governor, plays a crucial non-partisan role in ensuring that the judges nominated and confirmed in the state are of the highest caliber. With this new leadership in place, Massachusetts' legal system looks to maintain its standard of excellence and fairness as endorsed by the governor's office.
