In a move aimed at fostering transparency and shedding light on federal budgetary decisions, Governor Maura Healey has unveiled a new public dashboard. The website, detailed at mass.gov/fedimpact, is designed to track the Trump Administration's direct funding cuts to Massachusetts state agencies. A staggering $350 million has been slashed, affecting various programs, from mental health services in schools to broadband access expansion.
The dashboard's release coincides with further delayed funding distributions by the Trump administration, which includes a hold-up of hundreds of millions intended for critical public health initiatives. According to the Governor's office, this is merely one aspect of the federal government's detrimental impact on the state, which extends to cuts proposed for federal programs, NIH research, and federal employment, all of which will purportedly reverberate through Massachusetts' economy and communities.
Addressing the issue, Governor Healey said, "President Trump’s cuts to federal funding are having a terrible impact on Massachusetts and states across the country," in a statement obtained by Mass.gov. She highlighted that these reductions are not just numeric data but represent critical supports removed from students, babies, and disaster prevention efforts among others.
Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll also emphasized the significance of the dashboard as a reporting tool for various stakeholders, saying to Mass.gov, "Our administration is here to be a partner for everyone in the state who is being hurt by the actions of the federal government." The reporting form included in the dashboard is envisioned to help the state's administration tailor its response to the needs of cities, towns, nonprofits, and businesses affected by these federal cuts.
Massachusetts benefits annually from a total of $22.9 billion in federal funding, and these cuts represent a significant portion of what supports the state. The site also encourages entities to report the impacts of the funding shortfall. Governor Healey has instructed Quentin Palfrey of the Federal Funds and Infrastructure Office to keep an eye on these cuts and maintain open channels for communication and information exchange.
