Traffic in Matthews, NC, found a return to routine on Tuesday as roads previously closed due to a gas leak were fully reopened. The Matthews Police Department, on their official Facebook page, informed residents and travelers alike that the inconvenience had come to an end. "All roads impacted by this incident are now reopened," stated the update from the department, signaling an end to the delays that had plagued motorists in the area.
The social media update detailed the mitigation efforts that had taken place during the incident. Motorists, who were redirected onto the E John Street exit ramp from I-485 in an elaborate diversion to avoid the bridge undergoing repairs, could finally travel the interstate without detours. "Motorists can now travel on I-485 but will be diverted onto the E John Street exit ramp (from both directions) and then right back onto I-485 from the other side," detailed the earlier update, a situation that led to significant delays and the advice to seek alternative routes, as per the Matthews Police Department's post.
Initially, traffic was brought to a standstill when both directions of I-485 were closed at E. John Street, a direct result of the gas leak. The Matthews Police Department rapidly responded, as did Piedmont Natural Gas, though at the time, no estimate for the completion of repairs had been available, leaving many travelers' plans in limbo. Working rapidly to secure the area, Matthews Fire & EMS had also been on the scene, ensuring public safety and coordinating with municipal authorities.
During the course of the incident, community members were kept informed via updates from various town government agencies. The Matthews Police Department's Facebook post served as a primary source of information, providing a timely and efficient means of communication that, despite the circumstances, redirected citizens away from the site where repairs, ensuring they remained informed about the state of their roads.
