Memphis drivers can now smoothly navigate the new roundabout at the intersection of Interstate 55, Riverside Drive, and Crump Boulevard, completing a long-awaited infrastructure project. The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) celebrated the opening of the $111 million roundabout with Governor Bill Lee and Memphis Mayor Paul Young cutting the ribbon this past Tuesday. As stated by Action News 5, the completion marks an end to three years of construction and traffic disruptions in the area.

Along with improving traffic flow, this new interchange is part of a series of upgrades planned for West Tennessee. "This is just an example of projects that we are doing all across Tennessee; we have had historic funding into TDOT over the last couple years," Governor Bill Lee explained in a statement obtained by Action News 5. TDOT officials are to quickly begin working on another project on Summer Ave. and along I-40 to widen lanes, as they continue to make transport and commerce in Memphis a priority.

Residents from the nearby French Fort Historic District were among those feeling the positive effects of the new roundabout, ready to leave behind the heavy traffic that the construction phase brought. "They did very well and they worked well with us," French Fort resident Donnie Mathews told WREG. "It was a long time but they accommodated us very well and did the best they could to make it comfortable for us."

Expressing the significance of investments in the state's infrastructure, Governor Lee emphasized the draw for people and businesses to Memphis and the greater Tennessee area. "It's representative of significant investments that we're making in roads and bridges and highways all across Tennessee," he mentioned in an interview with FOX13 Memphis. With such projects, TDOT aims to not just improve transportation routes but to also enhance community connections, offering better access to services like health care and education.

While motorists may need some time to adjust to the new traffic pattern, many have expressed optimism about the improvement. "I’m anxious but I’m cautious," Mathews admitted to WREG, noting a willingness to adapt to the roundabout system. With this development, and others to follow, Memphis is poised to experience a more efficient and safe transportation future.
