A Memphis doctor, Dr. Sanjeev Kumar, is slated for a trial on September 8 after being charged with grievous allegations of misconduct spanning almost five years. The Poplar Avenue Clinic - Women's Health and Med Spa in Memphis, where Dr. Kumar operates, found itself in the eye of the judicial storm with a federal 23-count indictment. According to Action News 5, the indictment comprises allegations of Kumar coercing at least four women to travel for illicit sex acts, mishandling medical devices and procedures, and committing healthcare fraud between September 2019 and June 2024.
Dr. Kumar, also facing legal scrutiny for healthcare fraud and the re-utilization of single-use medical devices, is being accused of conducting unnecessary medical procedures, according to FOX13 Memphis. The upcoming trial casts a harsh spotlight on the doctor whose actions, if proved, reveal an abuse of the trust vested in the medical profession. Misused disposable medical devices and insanitary equipment management carry with them severe consequences, including federal charges.
The charges against Kumar are severe, with each count of sexual offense potentially landing him 20 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and five years of supervised release. On the other hand, allegations related to device misuse might result in up to three years of imprisonment and a $10,000 fine, along with a year of supervised release for each count. A similar gravitas is seen in the healthcare fraud charges, with maximum penalties of 20 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and up to three years of supervised release, as per Action News 5.
