The Memphis Police Department announced yesterday the death of Patrolman John Stevens, who was shot and fatally injured during an encounter with a hostile crowd. A social media post from the department provided details about the events leading up to the incident.
The incident occurred as Stevens, along with three other patrol officers, detained two individuals from a disorderly gathering. Tensions rose following accusations of police misconduct, prompting the crowd to become hostile. Amid calls for violence against the officers, Stevens and his colleagues were able to withdraw from the area, escorting the detainees away from the escalating situation.
As the group crossed the Bayou Gayoso bridge, the situation escalated. According to the department's report, gunfire erupted, and Patrolman Stevens sustained a serious leg injury. While all officers were able to escape the immediate threat, Stevens’ injuries were critical. He died several hours later despite receiving medical treatment.
While information continues to emerge, the department’s statement described the events leading to Patrolman Stevens’ death and noted the conditions faced by law enforcement during the encounter.
