Mesa has once again kick-started its annual Hydration Donation Campaign with ambitions to boldly surpass last year's contributions. According to a report by MesaNow, this year's inaugural event saw Walmart chip in a hefty 34,560 water bottles while local businesses pooled together $19,500 in cash donations. Mayor Mark Freeman praised the community’s commitment, asserting, "Every case of water and every dollar donated helps save lives during Arizona's brutal summer months."

Given the soaring temperatures that regularly hit triple digits, the campaign is a vital effort to combat dehydration, especially among the most vulnerable populations in the area. "The risks of dehydration are great for anyone exposed to the triple-digit temperatures," said Robert Campa of the Mesa Fire and Medical Department to MesaNow. The campaign has been a stalwart of community support since 2007, amassing over 7.6 million donated bottles of water over the years, and is currently aiming for 500,000 bottles and $40,000 in this year's drive.

In a new strategic push, campaigners are encouraging people to easily donate cash online, which can swiftly be used to buy more water without the hassle of handling bulky cases. Donors are reminded that their contributions may qualify for the Arizona Charitable Giving Tax Credit, which could make one eligible to shave off up to $987 for married filers or $495 for singles from their 2025 state income taxes. This tactful shift takes into account both logistical convenience and potential tax benefits for contributors.

Staying hydrated is a critical necessity, a point underscored by Jason Reed, president and CEO of United Food Bank, who noted in a statement to MesaNow, "We want to make sure each of our neighbors has plenty of water to stay hydrated." The Mesa Chamber of Commerce is not only endorsing this lifesaving initiative but also sparking friendly competition among businesses to stimulate further water and cash donations for the United Food Bank's purchase of more cases of water.
