As Michiganders returned to their routines after the Memorial Day weekend, they were met with a slight uptick in gas prices, a drive now costs a bit more, with the average price of a gallon of regular unleaded currently at $3.20, showing a 3-cent increase from the previous week. "Drivers in Michigan saw higher prices at the pump over Memorial Day weekend," Adrienne Woodland, spokesperson for AAA-The Auto Club Group, emphasized in a statement mentioned by The Detroit News.
The current upward trend in fuel costs marks a 16-cent rise compared to last month, however, it is still notably lower by 46 cents when contrasted with the figures from the same period in the preceding year, as CBS News Detroit reported. In association with these changes, the average expense for filling a 15-gallon tank is around $48, which is approximately $9 less than the highest prices experienced in July of 2024, with AAA attributing this data to new findings from the Energy Information Administration (EIA).
The price fluctuations come alongside a dip in national consumer gasoline demand, which, according to the AAA via a report by WLNS, decreased from 8.79 million barrels per day to 8.64, the domestic gasoline inventory conversely saw an increment climbing from 224.7 million barrels to 225.5 million, and gasoline production found an average pace at 9.6 million barrels per day.
The most and least expensive average gas prices across Michigan, showcased disparities within the state Benton Harbor, Lansing, and Grand Rapids came in at the high end of the spectrum with prices per gallon at $3.27, $3.26, and $3.25 respectively while the lowest averages were found in Traverse City at $3.04 Marquette at $3.08 and Metro Detroit holding steady at $3.16.
