Jason Nichols, the former girls' basketball coach at Millington Central High School, has been dismissed following a Title IX investigation into allegations of inappropriate conduct with students. In a public response to the firing, superintendent James Griffin of Millington Municipal Schools underscored the district's dedication to student safety, stating, "Millington Municipal Schools remains committed to the safety and well-being of our students and to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and accountability within our schools," as reported by Action News 5.
Following initial allegations, Nichols was suspended without pay effective April 8, 2025, a move that barred him from all school events and activities. The rigorous Title IX investigation process sought to give a fair hearing to all parties involved and concluded with Nichols' termination, as noted in a WREG report. Some parents expressed frustration with the school’s previous inaction, with one parent revealing to WREG, "I wish it would have happened sooner and I say that because we were hearing things three and four years ago." The parents hoped such allegations would be taken seriously in the future to ensure a safer environment for the students.
The investigation uncovered reports of misconduct by Nichols, including "reports of inappropriate handshakes involving sexual innuendos, being physically close in the weight room, and generally 'touchy' behavior," as outlined in documents obtained by the Commercial Appeal. The investigation's findings indicated that Nichols' behavior "occurred consistently from Fall 2023 through January 2025," leading to his eventual termination.
With Nichols fired, the school district is now proceeding with searching for a new coach. James Griffin wrote to the school community acknowledging its impacts and reaffirmed, "Our top priority remains the safety, well-being and continued support of our students."
