The Milton Police Department is gearing up to honor fallen officers and increase its engagement with the community for the upcoming Police Week. A series of events, from remembrances to social services, aim to solidify the police's commitment to serving the public beyond their call of duty. According to a statement on the City of Milton's official website, Police Week will straddle May 15, the date President John F. Kennedy designated in 1962 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day, and will feature activities throughout the region.
As a centerpiece of the week, Milton Police officers will join regional colleagues for a Fallen Officer Memorial Ceremony in Roswell on May 15. Held in remembrance of the 165 law enforcement personnel who lost their lives nationwide in the line of duty in 2024, the ceremony will take on special significance in Roswell, the site where Officer Jeremy Labonte was fatally shot in February of last year. In an effort to strengthen their bonds with the community, Milton Police will also partake in various activities, including a document shredding event on May 12 and an American Red Cross blood drive scheduled for May 13, which offers donors a $20 e-gift card as a thank-you gesture.
Community engagement efforts continue with the annual "Torch Run" on May 14, designed to raise awareness for the Special Olympics. Beginning at 8 a.m., the officers will carry the torch through downtown Crabapple and hand it off to their Roswell counterparts, fostering a tradition of camaraderie and support for a meaningful cause.
The week's activities come to a close on May 16, as officers will accompany students from Crabapple Crossing Elementary, celebrating National Walk Safely to School Day, establishing a presence that emphasizes safety and community ties beside young learners. Later that day at 4 p.m., the MPD Annual Awards Ceremony will be held, welcoming the public to recognize officers' commitment and service. The ceremony takes place at the Milton Municipal Court, located in the same complex as the Police Station, as noted by the Milton government's website.
Milton Police extend their gratitude for the ongoing support and active participation from the community. For those interested in supporting or participating in the Police Week activities, details can be found on the City of Milton's website.
