The Milwaukee Common Council has passed new legislation to remove gender-specific language from the city’s municipal code related to fire department roles. Ordinance file #221377 was approved unanimously and replaces outdated terms with gender-neutral alternatives in sections covering the Police and Fire Departments and the Fireman's Annuity Benefit Fund. The change ensures that all firefighters are recognized regardless of gender identity.
According to the City of Milwaukee news release, the ordinance was sponsored by Alderperson JoCasta Zamarripa, Alderman Scott Spiker, Alderman Peter Burgelis, Alderman Lamont Westmoreland, Alderwoman Larresa Taylor, and Alderwoman Sharlen Moore. The sponsors acknowledged Fire Chief Aaron Lipski’s support in advocating for the updates and recognized the contributions of women firefighters currently serving.
The timing of the ordinance, passed shortly before LGBTQ+ Pride Month in June, was noted by the council members, who stated it reflects a message of inclusion and recognition. The update aligns with broader efforts across the country to use inclusive language in public service and reflects an ongoing shift in how official roles and titles are defined.
