Hartland police ordered residents in the area of Campus and Willow drives to shelter in place Wednesday afternoon while officers investigated an incident in the neighborhood. Officers asked people to stay inside and move to the lowest levels of their homes, with the order to remain in effect until an all-clear was issued.
The advisory, first reported by WISN 12 News, covers a residential corridor that includes Lake Country Lutheran High School, which sits at 401 Campus Drive directly within the affected zone. WISN reporter Amy Fleury noted the outlet had a crew headed to the scene and said the station would update the story as more information became available. As of the station's 2:33 p.m. CDT update, police had not detailed the nature of the incident that prompted the order.
A Quiet Corridor Near School and Subdivision
The stretch between Campus and Willow drives also borders the Paradise Trails neighborhood development, a residential subdivision just north of State Trunk Highway 16 that connects to Campus Drive by way of Wild Oak Road, according to Village of Hartland planning records. That mix of a high school campus and single-family subdivision is what made Wednesday's shelter-in-place request unusual for a corner of the village more accustomed to school pickup traffic than police activity.
Shelter-in-place advisories in Hartland are relatively rare. In January 2022, police issued a similar order for residents along Hartridge Drive during an investigation, lifting it about an hour later, as reported by FOX6 News Milwaukee. A year later, a shooting that began in Hartland led to a vehicle pursuit into neighboring Sussex, triggering a SWAT response, school lockdowns and a residential shelter-in-place advisory, according to a Waukesha Police Department statement.
Regional Backup Available If Needed
Emergency alerts like Wednesday's advisory are dispatched through the Waukesha County Communications Center, which handles emergency communications for 20 police departments and 17 fire departments across the county using the AlertSense network to push phone and text alerts to specific geographic zones. Hartland's own police department, led by Chief of Police Torin Misko, has 18 sworn officers providing round-the-clock coverage and is accredited through the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Accreditation Group, per the Village of Hartland.
For higher-risk or barricaded-subject situations, Hartland and other Waukesha County municipal departments can call on the Waukesha County Sheriff's Office Tactical Enforcement Unit, a regional team of 35 tactical officers and 11 negotiators backed by a deployable technology unit that includes drones and robots. It remains unknown whether that tactical unit or any regional backup was requested for Wednesday's incident, and police had not said what triggered the order as of the station's early-afternoon update.
A Growing Suburb Used to Bigger Headlines Lately
Hartland is a Lake Country suburb along the Bark River roughly 25 miles west of Milwaukee, with an estimated population of 9,970 residents, according to Data USA. The village has drawn attention for other reasons recently: earlier this month, the 112-unit Sunnyslope Estates apartment complex sold as part of a $29.5 million regional portfolio trade, closing just eight days before Wednesday's police incident, Hoodline previously reported. And in March, Hartland voters weighed a $3.2 million operational referendum meant to keep the local Lake Country School District running and avoid a potential closure.
