A long-standing pillar of the Milwaukee community, Willie "Baylew" Mitchell, will be memorialized tomorrow with an honorary street renaming. Residents can attend the unveiling at 1 p.m., which will recognize Mitchell's over 40 years of contribution to the city's youth and various local organizations.
The stretch of North Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive from West Ring Street to West Concordia Avenue will bear his name, a gesture to permanently engrave his legacy within the 6th Aldermanic District. According to the City of Milwaukee document, Mitchell was an integral figure, having worked with groups such as the Municipal & Children's Courts, Project Respect, and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee, among many others.
Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs has expressed her support for the move, stating that this act will serve as a "fitting tribute" to Mr. Mitchell's enduring impact on the community. His career spanned various roles, from counseling and mentoring to coaching and refereeing, always with a focus on uplifting the city's youth.
Community members are expected to attend a memorial event on Tuesday honoring Mitchell, a longtime advocate known for his contributions to local service initiatives. Organizers say the event will highlight his work in community development and youth empowerment. The gathering will take place in Milwaukee and is open to the public.
