Calling all nature enthusiasts and citizen scientists in Minneapolis! The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) is inviting locals to venture into North Mississippi Regional Park for a day of biodiversity discovery during a series of events known as BioBlitzes, the first of which is set for May 31. This initiative offers an engaging way for community members to contribute to scientific data by identifying local wildlife and plant species with the guidance of MPRB naturalists and area experts.
Participants don't require any scientific background to assist in tracking down everything from insects and birds to reptiles and fungi. According to the MPRB announcement, "You don't need to be a scientist! MPRB naturalists and local experts will be on hand for guidance to identify all kinds of organisms." The events are structured across three sessions throughout the day, allowing flexibility for people to attend one, two, or all the intervals, with lunch provided for those who register for both the morning and afternoon sessions.
For those keen on birds, an Early birding session will launch the day's activities at 7:30 am. This is followed by the main morning session from 9:15 am to 12:15 pm, and post-lunch efforts continue from 1 to 4 pm. This immersive experience aims to create a comprehensive snapshot of various life forms at a specific place and point in time, a valuable resource for ongoing scientific research.
Additional BioBlitz dates are slated for June 14 and June 28 at Minnehaha Regional Park and Theodore Wirth Regional Park, respectively. These events are designed not only to foster an appreciation for the area's natural ecosystems but also to connect the community through shared experiences and learning opportunities. "Join friends, neighbors and others (you don't have to be a scientist!)" the government bulletin exclaims, encouraging participation from all ages, while noting that youth under 14 must be accompanied by an adult.
Whether you're a seasoned naturalist or just looking to spend some time outdoors, these BioBlitzes promise a meaningful way to explore and contribute to understanding Minneapolis's biodiversity. Registrations can be completed on the MPRB website, where additional nature programs and activities are also listed for those interested in further engaging with the park's natural offerings.
