The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) has released new data showing the highest graduation rate in the state's history, prompting praise from state leaders and education officials. According to Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy, Minnesota’s 2024 graduation rate reached a record high, while the gap in academic achievement between white students and students of color has begun to shrink.

“Minnesota’s 2024 graduation rate is at the highest level ever recorded, and that is great news for our schools, our students and our state’s future,” Murphy said in a statement. She attributed the progress to increased educational investments made by the DFL caucus in the past year and recognized the hard work of teachers, students, and families. Murphy also reaffirmed her commitment to continued support for education in Minnesota.

The graduation rate for 2024 stands at 84.2%, up from 83.1% in 2023. A total of 59,720 students graduated, according to MDE data. Senator Mary Kunesh, Chair of the Senate Education Finance Committee, acknowledged the gains but emphasized the ongoing work required to eliminate disparities in the education system.

Senator Steve Cwodzinski, Chair of the Senate Education Policy Committee, highlighted the value of sustained support for students. “When we support our students and give them the tools they need, there’s nothing they can’t accomplish,” Cwodzinski said, adding that the upward trend reflects the benefits of long-term investment in education.
