Work is set to begin on a project to improve pedestrian safety near Dahlgren Family Park, with crews from Westerlund Excavation starting the Dahlgren Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) Curb Ramp Project. Scheduled to commence on May 20, government officials say the work will take place daily between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m., and locals can expect to see occasional eastbound lane closures on North Bend Way extending into early June. The City of North Bend announced that the SE Tanner Road's intersection with North Bend Way will also be temporarily closed at times during this period for construction activities.
Despite the construction, the city has assured that access to homes and businesses will not be hindered by the project, which aims to connect the south side of North Bend Way to the existing RRFB near Dahlgren Park, paving the way for the future Tanner Trail Extension. The project's scope includes the installation of curb and gutter, drainage enhancements, and an ADA-compliant curb ramp.
The North Bend City Council has expressed that this project is crucial for public safety, a sentiment that resulted in the go-ahead given at the City Council meeting on May 6. According to the official council packet, "the connection is a public safety priority; a necessity to ensure that everyone can access the crossing."
Completion of the crosswalk curb ramp is expected to be wrapped up in early June, weather permitting.
