The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) has made a splash in the world of water safety by rolling out life jacket loaner stations at 32 of its state parks. Fret not—ODNR has got you covered, literally, with free access to a range of life jacket sizes suitable for everyone from the tiniest of tots to full-grown adults. This new program aims to strip down any excuse not to wear a life jacket and promote safer boating practices.
In a statement obtained by ODNR, Director Mary Mertz mentioned, “Wearing a life jacket can make the difference between life and death.” She's looking at not just talking the safety talk but walking the life-preserving walk by removing barriers to this utilitarian yet lifesaving piece of gear. ODNR didn't just sprinkle a few life jackets across the state—they went big with a whopping 1,890 life jackets to ensure availability.
Boating mishaps are not a light matter, considering the sobering statistic that about 75% of all boating deaths are a result of people drowning, many of which could have been avoided had a life jacket been worn. Those stats underscore the critical importance of ODNR's initiative, providing easy and cost-free access to life jackets to combat these preventable tragedies and encouraging Ohioans to take safety at sea seriously.
Whether you're eager to get paddling, hook a big one while fishing, or aim to chillax beachside, the new loaner stations are now in service, strategically placed to be easily spotted before visitors venture out onto the water. ODNR hopes this move will significantly damper the risk of drowning in Ohio’s waterways. After all, with so many wonderful Ohio state parks to enjoy, it's better to be soaking up the sun than becoming a statistic. So, don one of those life jackets hanging at the loaner stations—and set sail (or paddle) knowing you've taken a key step toward waterborne wiseness.
