Governor Mike DeWine, in tandem with the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, has unveiled a new specialty license plate aimed at shining a spotlight on the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, marking a tangible stride in the state's public health outreach.
The plates, which herald the message of the lifeline's fundamental importance, represent an effort to embed the reminder of help's availability into the daily lives of Ohioans, Governor DeWine describes it as a symbol that "Every life matters, and the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is a vital part of Ohio’s effort to ensure that help is available when it's needed most," according to Governor Mike DeWine, State of Ohio news release. Since its national inception in July last year, the 988 Lifeline has become a cornerstone of support, providing confidential aid around the clock, from Cleveland to Cincinnati. The message grows clear, help is but a call away, even if the weight of struggle seeks to mute the cry for aid.
Ohio’s 19 call centers, integral to the lifeline's infrastructure, have fielded nearly 538,000 contacts through calls, texts, and chats, effectively illuminating the demand and resonance of such a service within the Buckeye State. They're averaging over 19,500 contacts each month. The vast majority of these cries for help find an answer from within the state's borders, encapsulating a community's embrace where only about 1 percent of calls need to transfer to a national backup provider, reinforcing the notion that Ohio carries its own when despair casts its darkest shadows.
