The Ohio State Highway Patrol has reported a significant drop in traffic fatalities over the Memorial Day weekend, setting an example that perhaps the diligence of law enforcement and the community's heightened awareness are making strides toward safer roads. The provisional statistics point to 11 fatal crashes that resulted in 12 deaths throughout the state during the holiday period, a marked improvement from the 26 lives lost in the previous year. The collective efforts in traffic enforcement and public conscientiousness are paying off.
State troopers were kept busy with 17,034 traffic enforcement contacts from May 23 through May 26 – an endeavor that included 410 arrests for impaired driving, and 70 drug arrests, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol's report. Safety belt citations were issued on 2,090 occasions.
In addition to enforcement, the Patrol's commitment to road safety extended to directly assisting motorists, with 9,515 non-enforcement contacts, including 1,746 instances of assisting motorists in need. These actions demonstrate a department actively engaged in supporting those on the road, going beyond merely issuing citations.
