Oklahoma City's popular soccer complex is set to carry the legacy of a local business luminary and philanthropist following the city council's recent decision. The Oklahoma City Council has voted to dedicate the facility to C.B. Cameron, who, together with his father C.W. Cameron, established significant enterprises such as American Fidelity and First Fidelity Bank. C.B. Cameron's life was tragically cut short by an airplane crash in 1977, but his contributions to public spaces and philanthropic causes in the city continue to resonate.
"The Cameron family are generous patrons of OKC parks initiatives, including Scissortail Park and the Myriad Botanical Gardens," declared Ward 8 Councilman Mark Stonecipher. As reported by the City of Oklahoma City, Stonecipher added, "This is a meaningful way to recognize C.B.’s contributions to our community. He continues to be missed by his family and the many people who knew him.” This homage reflects not just a bereavement for the man himself but an acknowledgment of the civic spirit that the Cameron clan has woven into the fabric of Oklahoma City.
The C.B. Cameron Soccer Complex, currently operated by the North OKC Soccer Club, features 17 fields where local youth engage in the spirited play of soccer. But the facility isn't just lying fallow in tribute; it stands as a vibrant hub of community and development, set to undergo a $25 million enhancement courtesy of MAPS 4 funds. This injection will introduce 10 new fields, a welcoming plaza area complete with shaded seating, supplementary concession areas, restrooms, and hospitality for visitors and athletes alike.
Slated for completion in late 2025, these improvements aim to foster an inclusive environment where sport can flourish. In addition to structural enhancements like improved parking and a new maintenance facility, the soccer complex's irrigation system and pedestrian circulation are also on the docket for a significant upgrade.
